A vintage photograph, taken in Pwllheli Goods yard in 1950, facing toward Yr Allt Fawr which can just be seen behind the engine .The gentleman in the left foreground is my father, Robert Japheth. The shunter, holding the pole is Jack Williams, of Abererch Road, Pwllheli. The names of the driver and fireman are not know at present. My father, having left school at 15 for a job in Peacock's in Pwllheli High street, speculatively applied for a job with the GWR and attended interview at Barmouth Station in December 1940 and was appointed clerk at Pwllheli Goods, controlling & reporting wagon movements, before being called up to the Royal Engineers in 1941.
The engine is a 'DukeDog' number 9005 (formerly 3205), a GWR series rebuild from the boilers of the 'Duke' class of engine and the bogies of the 'Bulldog' class. These were synonymous with the Cambrian lines until scrapping in the 1960s, although one, number 9017, does still remain in preservation today.
For more information on this class of engine, visit the Great Western Archive site, link below the photo.
